Some Significance |
Bunbury Courthouse has cultural heritage significance for the following reasons:
the building is situated on a site that has been associated with law and order since the earliest days of settlement.
Bunbury Courthouse is a modern court complex, two-storey brick and glass structure with aluminium barge cladding.
Bunbury’s modern law courts were opened on 14 January 1985.
The new law courts were built on the site of the second Bunbury Court House (built 1906; demolished 1983) in Stephen Street. The site has been associated with law and order since the foundation of Bunbury.
Justice in Bunbury had initially been administrated by the Resident Magistrates from their homes and then from a room in the police building in Wittenoom Street. In 1885 a court room was added to the post office (located opposite the police station) for use as a courthouse. By 1906 this room was no longer used, most likely due to lack of space.
High degree of integrity (original intent clear, current use compatible, high long term sustainability).
High degree of authenticity with much original fabric remaining.
(These statements based on street survey only).
Condition assessed as good (assessed from streetscape survey only).
