Fisherman's Hollow is of historic significance for associations with Mary Lindsay, original owner of the
Significance Yanchep Lagoon and Fisherman's Hollow are of social significance for associations with the fishing
industry and for their use for recreational pursuits over most of the twentieth century.
Fisherman's Hollow is an example of a cultural landscape that does not contain any significant
structures.
Fisherman's Hollow is located in Reserve 29694 Yanchep, within the City of Wanneroo's North Ward
on the eastern side of Brazier Road.
Fisherman's Hollow comprises a grassed picnic area and is partially surrounded by undulating land
covered with native shrubs. There is a parking area to the west with access via Brazier Road. The
site includes mature native trees and palms. There is a painted brick and Colorbond gabled roofed
ablution block and timber picnic shelters. Painted timber signage on timber posts at the level of the
parking area denotes the site.
Although used prior to European occupation by Aboriginal people, Fisherman's Hollow together with
Yanchep Lagoon have been frequented by holiday makers and fishermen since the early 1900s.
In 1926 Mary Lindsay purchased approximately 23,000 acres of land along the coast in the
approximate location of Two Rocks. This became known as Yanchep Estate. A timber framed
homestead was constructed in the area north of Brazier Road and west of Two Rocks Road. This
remains extant. Mary Lindsay subsequently built a hostel and store for campers in the area (not
extant). Although meals were not provided there was camping accommodation and essential supplies
including water, food and fishing tackle available.
During World War II the army took over the premises after which Mary Lindsay ceased operations.
The area continued to be used by crayfishermen who anchored their boats in the Yanchep Lagoon
during the 1950s and early 60s until the Two Rocks Marina opened and they relocated there.
Alan Bond purchased 1,800 acres of land at Yanchep in 1971 with the intention of developing
Yanchep Sun City as a residential and tourism development. Development began in close proximity to
Fisherman's Hollow and Yanchep Lagoon with the first subdivision being released near the lagoon
beach and kiosk. Fisherman's
Hollow and Yanchep Lagoon are vested in the City of Wanneroo.
The hollow is still used as a popular picnic spot by locals and tourists (2005).,
