Statement of Significance

House, 314 High Street, is a single storey brick and iron house dating from 1921. The place has aesthetic value for its contribution to the streetscape and the surrounding area. It is representative of the typical building stock located within the residential areas of Fremantle. It is historically significant as a representation of typical workers' houses in the Fremantle area. The place is an example of the Federation Bungalow style of architecture.

Physical Description

House, 314 High Street is a single storey brick and zincalume house constructed as a simple variation of the Federation Bungalow style of Architecture. The walls are painted brick. The roof is hipped and gabled and clad with zincalume. There are two painted brick chimneys evident. The verandah is under a continuous roof supported by turned timber posts. The asymmetrical front façade has a protruding front room under the gable roof with two timber framed double hung sash windows. Under the verandah roof the façade features a front door with fanlight over and a timber framed double hung sash window with a rendered sill. There is a high painted brick wall to the front boundary line.

History

As was customary in English towns, the main street of the town was named High St.
This Workers Home Board owned cottage was occupied by Henry John Seeber in 1921/22. By 1934/35, Charles Bennett Odgers owned and occupied the house and was still there in 1941/42.
The house was originally number 596 and is Lot 1572.
