Statement of Significance

House, 107 Solomon Street, is a single storey brick and iron house dating from 1927. The place has aesthetic value for its contribution to the streetscape and the surrounding area. It is representative of the typical building stock located within the residential areas of Fremantle. It is historically significant as a representation of typical workers' houses in the Fremantle area. The place is an example of the Federation Bungalow style of architecture.

Physical Description

House, 107 Solomon Street is a single storey brick and zincalume house constructed as a simple variation of the Federation Bungalow style of Architecture. The walls are face brick. The roof is hipped and gabled and clad with zincalume, and has exposed rafters. The verandah is under the large gabled roof supported by timber posts. The asymmetrical front façade has a front door with side light and three timber framed casement windows under the gable, and two timber framed casement windows under a zincalume clad awning supported by timber brackets on the other side. A brick corbelled chimney is evident. There is a steel picket fence to the front boundary line with a steel gate.

History

Solomon Street was originally known as Mary Street. It changed its name in 1951/52 to honour Elias Solomon, a former mayor and MLA.
The original owners of the vacant lot were Henry and Mary Higham. In 1927-28 ownership passed to Alfred John Rate who had a brick residence constructed and was owner occupier in 1928-29. The house is on Lot 50 of 770/1.
