One of the few surviving examples in good repair in the Bayley Street Precinct of the characteristic shop and house building type using materials of a more permanent nature, demonstrating the mixture of business premises and housing in Bayley Street around 1900 and the growing town's aspirations of permanence.
Brick and iron roofed business premises with freestyle classical stucco facade with an ornamented parapet. The associated timber framed house was originally clad in corrugated iron this has recently been replaced with inappropriate hardi-plank cladding.
The place is constructed upon the site of Benstead. Mercer and Co.,a butcher's shop originally accommodated in a tent. Benstead became the first post master with mail being collected from his shop after Warden Finnerty relinquished the role and before a permanent post office and postmaster were installed in 1894.
