The place has cultural heritage significance for the following reasons:
The place is associated with Edwin Henry James who was the principle of the Albany Boys Collegiate School in the 1890s and lived in this house.
The place is a fine example of a Victorian Regency house that has maintained a high level of authenticity.
Some of the notable features of this place include:
• Set close to street
• Though it appears single storey from the façade, owing to the depth of the block and the sharp decline the house is two storey at the rear
• Half hipped corrugated iron roof
• Twin chimneys with moulded capping
• Projecting gable wing with decorative bargeboard
• Double hung sash windows
• Stone footings
• Verandah under separate roof
• Unadorned timber verandah posts and balustrading with iron lacework
Some obvious modifications include:
• Brickwork has been painted
• Rear addition
The place at 152-154 Serpentine Road was built on original Suburban Lot 37. The Rate Book entry for 1891 shows the landowner as Mrs Whitefield and the house was tenanted by Edwin Henry James, schoolmaster. James was the principle for the Collegiate Boys School located at the Wesley Hall in Duke Street.
In 1897 Mrs Whitefield was still the owner but by this time there is a house and the tenant is Samuel North, boarding house keeper. By 1900 A. Mercer, farmer is living in the house.
Lot 37 was later subdivided and this house was located on Lot 1 of Sub Lot 37.
