The place represents the provision of rental housing by the State and Commonwealth governments after World War Two; The place is indicative of the standard plan and type of housing constructed by the State Government in the twentieth-century; The place is an example of the second wave of State Housing construction in the City of Stirling following the end of World War Two.
House, 181 Wilding St, Doubleview was built from a standard plan ‘Prefabricated House Overseas Type TIU2,’ and the place appears to be largely unmodified since its construction. The house has an asymmetrical front with a projecting northern room, which flanks a recessed main entrance at the centre of the front elevation. The house is built on timber stumps and the walls are clad with weatherboard. The windows are timber-framed with three rectangular sashes on the front elevation replaced by aluminium framed windows, while the two sashed louvered window on the northern projecting face has been retained. The rear elevation presents a single weatherboard face with a small timber-framed window and a recessed rear entry in the south-west corner of the house. The roof of the house is constructed of Marseilles tile, hipped with a low pitch. A brick chimney is apparent on the southern edge of the place, the top featuring a small tin rainguard and a thin concrete lip. Smaller tin ventilation chimneys are apparent on the southwest corner.
The 2014 Thematic History of Government Housing in Western Australia noted that between 1944 and 1955, 46 single detached residences were constructed within the grid bounded by Newborough, Ravenscar and Herbert Streets and Scarborough Beach Road (south). House, 181 Wilding St, Doubleview was constructed in approximately 1952 as part of this second wave of State Housing construction in Stirling following the end of World War Two. Aerial imagery of the area from 1953 shows the completed house as part of a residential streetscape of similar small single-storey houses.
House, 181 Wilding St, Doubleview has been used for the purpose of social housing since its construction and is now vacant.
