Statement of Significance

House, 1 Thompson Road is a typical stone and iron single storey cottage dating from the early 1900s. The place has aesthetic value for its contribution to the streetscape and the surrounding area. It is representative of the typical building stock located within the residential areas of North Fremantle. Historically significant as a representation of typical workers' houses in the North Fremantle area. The place is a simple example of the Victorian Georgian style of architecture.

Physical Description

House, 1 Thompson Road is a single storey limestone and iron cottage with symmetrical facade designed as a late example of the Victorian Georgian style of architecture. Walls are limestone with tuck pointed red brick quoins and reveals. The roof is hipped corrugated iron with no eaves. The verandah is under a separate corrugated iron roof supported by timber posts. The front elevation is symmetrical with two timber sash windows with side lights and a central front door with side lights. There are two tall brick corbelled chimneys with terracotta pots. There is a low level limestone and timber picket fence with red brick pillars to the front boundary line.

History

Thompson Road was named for George Thompson (1838-1874), Fremantle's first town clerk (1871-73). The street is mainly residential, with some commercial development at the northern end between Alfred Road and McCabe Road. The majority of the houses were built c. 1900. Only a few lots on the street remained vacant in the 1920s.

House, 1 Thompson Road was built c. 1904. J.C. Woods was recorded as being the occupant in that year, and remained so until 1912. John and Mary Cocks subsequently moved into the house, and remained there until 1933. Improvements were made to the property during this time, with a room added to the four roomed brick house c. 1930.

A 1939 diagram shows House, 1 Thompson Road as having a full length front verandah with a centrally located path leading from the street to the front of the house.

The Cocks family retained ownership until the 1960s, before ownership passed to Frank Linley in 1968. In 1977 Croft Constructions, of Sorrento, completed work on a rear extension to the place, involving the construction of a new family area, bathroom and laundry.

This place was included in the 'North Fremantle Heritage Study' (1994) as a place contributing to the development and heritage of North Fremantle. It was also included in the list of heritage places in the City of Fremantle identified by the Fremantle Society (1979/80) - RED -significant for contributing to the unique character of Fremantle.
