The spring was important to the agricultural success of the area called Namarillup, now called Glen Lossie.
The spring is significant as the site of the stopping place between Perth and Albany.
A picture of the Namarillup Well shows a ring of stones, forming a rough wall.
The Namarillup Well was fed by the Namarillup Spring, which was near to where Thomas Chipper, the policeman turned cartage and mail contractor, settled in the 1850's.
After 1857, Chipper provided an essential mail service linking Perth to Albany. He finally sold his property when he was in financial difficulties in 1880, but continued to live there until 1888.
