Statement of Significance

This place is representative of early commercial development on Guildford Road and shows the trend towards strip shopping in the 1930s.

Physical Description

This group of shops is constructed of brick with stepped brick parapets, the larger premises having typical Art Deco modelling to the parapet with a strongly defined central vertical finial. Both shops have a symmetrical arrangement of large display windows flanking a central entrance, but the larger has an additional display window added to one side. This shop also shows evidence of having a tiled dado traditionally used on butcher's shops (one of which was housed in the group). The tied cantilever canopies are still in place but the windows have been boarded up and painted over in keeping with its present use.

History

These shops were built in 1939 by C. Battern who, in 1937, acquired a small store on the same site, which he subsequently demolished. The family owned another on the other side of Guildford Road. These shops are significant as part of the trend towards strip shopping areas on the major arteries during the 1930s.
