Its contribution to the urban context should be maintained and enhanced.

Statement of Significance

House, 165 Edmund Street, is a single storey brick and tile house dating from the 1900s. The place has aesthetic value for its contribution to the streetscape and the surrounding area. It is representative of the typical building stock located within the residential areas of Beaconsfield. It is historically significant as a representation of typical workers' houses in the Fremantle area. The place is a simple example of the Victorian Georgian style of architecture.

Physical Description

House, 165 Edmund Street is a single storey, single room width masonry and tile house with an asymmetrical facade designed as a simple variation of the Victorian Georgian style of architecture. The walls are rendered brick. The roof is hipped and clad with tiles. The façade has a front door to one side, and one window with aluminium frame. The verandah has a separate flat roof supported by steel posts in a ‘V’ formation. There is a rendered corbelled chimney evident. There is a low face brick fence to the front boundary line.

History

Edmund Street was named for Sir Edmund R Fremantle, a nephew of Sir Charles Fremantle the founder of the city. Edmund served with Sir Charles as Flag Lieutenant from 1858 – 1861. He died in 1929 at the age of 93. Edmund Street was gazetted on the 25 May 1922 and was previously known as Marmion Road.
House 165 Edmund Street is on what is known today as Lot 1 of 8a of 38 of CSL 7. Before the mid 1930s the house was known as 651 Edmund Street.
There is no record of this lot in the 1899 rate books and in the 1900 rate books, a cottage owned by H. Edwards with no tenant, is shown for Lot 8c of CSL 7. In 1905/06 Janet Edwards is recorded as the owner of 651 Edmund Street, and her tenant was John Lambert Gallagher, a clerk and in 1910/11 John McIntyre was her tenant. By 1915/16 and until at least 1920/21 the cottage belonged to the Estate of H W Edwards and tenants included Fred Thorn in 1915/16 and Lewis Abbott in 1920/21. By 1929/30 Ernest James Keys was the owner/occupier. Keyes was still the owner in 1945/46 and had a series of tenants including John Charles Melber in 1935/36, Florence Mabel Myer in 1940/41 and Albert Edward Myer in 1945/46.
