Physical Description

House 11 Harbour Road (1900) is a single storey weatherboard and iron clad cottage with a symmetrical facade designed as a late example of the Victorian Georgian style of architecture. The walls are painted horizontal weatherboards. The roof hipped has no eaves and is clad with corrugated iron, the chimney is not extant. There is recently reconstructed bull nosed verandah also clad with corrugated iron roof supported on square timber posts between timber vertical railed balustrading. The front facade is symmetrical with a central front door with a fanlight and timber framed split paned double hung sash windows either side. The house is slightly raised from the street level on timber stumps and there are timber steps with to the front boundary and a small garden area behind.

History

In 1895, Sub 56, Town Lot 14 was vacant land owned by Chamberlain, Wray and Davies. These men responsible for the subdivision of the area in that year and by 1900, the lot had been sold to William Tait. By this time, a cottage had been built on the lot. Harry Mewson, a traveller, was listed as the occupant.

In 1910/11, the property was listed in the rate book as a cottage and stables at 31 Harbour Road. At this time, the house was owned by William Linkset. Tait, the previous owner, was the tenant.

William Linkset continued to live in the house until his death c. 1930. In 1935/36, the property was transferred to Kate Gribble. At this time, Mervyn Wenn was listed as the tenant. The property was described as a residence and stable until the late 1940s. Ms Gribble maintained the house as a rental property until the early 1950s, when it was sold to Guiseppe Mollica and occupied in turn by Francesco Migliori, William Melvin, and long-term tenant Wayne Clarence. The house remained in the Mollica family until c. 1980.

A diagram dated 1954 shows House, 11 Harbour Road as a weatherboard cottage with full length front and rear verandahs. The house had centrally located front steps, rear steps, a galvanised iron building near the back verandah and another galvanised iron shed at the rear of the back yard.

This place was identified by the Fremantle Society in 1979/80 as being of cultural heritage significance. (Coded: Red: "Significantly contributing to the unique character of Fremantle") It was also included in the "Heritage Study South Fremantle", prepared by John Taylor Architects, for the City of Fremantle, June 1993.

A Heritage Assessment was prepared in May 2009 by the City of Fremantle for a DA submission to Council for demolition of a rear shed and replacement with a water tank and the installation of solar panels onto the bull nosed verandah roof.
