Statement of Significance
The Masonic Lodge has some social significance, representing the growth and strength of middle-class, Protestant ideology in a rural town. It also illustrates the segregation of gender activities in being a male only institution.
Physical Description
The original structure is surrounded by numerous additions and alterations that have submersed the original intent. Toilet facilities and rooms have been added. The fa?ade has been remodelled.
History
In 1898 Bishop Riley consecrated the Katanning Masonic Lodge (No. 30). The establishment of a lodge reflected the growing middle-class Protestant ethos in the town and many prominent men of the community were to join.
It was not until several years later that the lodge could erect its own hall. The hall cost approx £485 to erect and the foundation stone was laid by Wor. Bro. The Hon Wesley Maley, MLC. The lodge was consecrated and dedicated by the MW Pro. Grand master, Bishop Riley of Perth, on Wednesday 14th November 1903. The hall before it was completed, was reported in the local paper as having two rooms:
The main one of which will be 35 feet in length. Platforms will be provided in either side of this room whilst a dais will be put at the extreme end. The other room will be about half the size and into it will lead a porch way, which will be an imposing one, having steps of brick and cement leading to the door and the Masonic emblems above the portal. The building will be 25ft in height, 59ft in length, and 29ft in width. [GSH, 29/8/03, p.2]
