Statement of Significance

The place has historic value for its associations with the implementation of the standard gauge railway in Western Australia.
The place has historic value as an example of an engineering challenge and achievements undertaken by Western Australian professionals. The place has aesthetic value as an illustration of how dramatically the physical environment has been shaped to accommodate new technologies.

Physical Description

A cutting through rock creating a narrow gorge with very steep embankments.

History

This is the deepest cut on the standard gauge railway. At the time of its construction it was the deepest cut in the Southern Hemisphere. it is still one of the deepest cuts constructed by Westrail.
