Statement of Significance

Offices is significant for the associations with for early professional services in Chinatown. It is an element in the streetscape and contributes to the character and townscape of Broome’s town centre.

Physical Description

Located on a sloping site, the building is raised on round concrete piers. The single storey timber framed building with enclosed perimeter verandahs. The timber framed building is clad with horizontal corrugated iron.

History

This was the offices and residence of the local solicitors. The solicitors were H. D. Forbes and Walter Clarke Hall. Forbes lived at 17 or 19 Barker Street, so Hall must have occupied the residence here. H.D. Forbes was also known as Koko and was renowned for his miniature plasticine art. The solicitor's offices were conveniently situated opposite the old Courthouse and police lockup.
