Physical Description

The Fremantle Fishermen's Co-operative Jetty was the third jetty built for the use of fishing boats at Lancelin. The first jetty was installed by Patersons/Tropical Traders and the second was built by Lancelin Products. These two private jetties were situated on either side of the existing "Co-op Jetty", and have long since been demolished. The "Co-op Jetty" was built in approximately 1951/52 with jarrah timbers carted from Boonanine Hill on the range east of Beermullah by one of the original residents of Lancelin, Clarrie Bateman (Ronald Edgar, 2005). It is not known who performed the actual construction work. Until fairly recently the jetty was used to service the crayfishing industry, but silting of the Lancelin Bay has caused the beach to build up to such an extent the jetty is no longer usable for that purpose. The jetty is owned by the State Government. Licences are issued by the Department of Planning and Infrastructure at Fremantle (which incorporated the Harbour and Lights Department) to users of the jetty. It is presently licensed to Goodoil Investments Pty Ltd (a Roberts Family Company of the Multiplex Group) of Perth, who use it to load and unload vessels and to support the inflow and outflow pipes for the circulation of seawater through their live crayfish enterprise immiately adjacent to the jetty.
