Statement of Significance

House, 324 High Street, is a single storey timber and tile house dating from 1927. The place has aesthetic value for its contribution to the streetscape and the surrounding area. It is representative of the typical building stock located within the residential areas of Fremantle. It is historically significant as a representation of typical workers' houses in the Fremantle area. The place is an example of the Federation Bungalow style of architecture.

Physical Description

House, 324 High Street is a single storey timber and tile house constructed in the Federation Bungalow style of Architecture. The walls are timber framed and clad with timber boards. The roof is hipped and gabled and clad with tiles and has exposed rafters. There is a brick chimney with chimney pot evident. The central protruding verandah is under the gabled tiled roof supported by timber posts and enclosed by timber boards, with side access to the central front door. The corners of the front facade feature three timber framed eight pane casement windows to the front and two similar windows around the side walls. There is a separate flat timber eave above these windows.

History

As was customary in English towns, the main street of the town was named High St.
The land on which house 324 High Street stands was vacant and owned by Frederick Thomas Knox in 1916/17. Knox owned the vacant land until the mid 1920s and in 1927/28 a house had been built and was owned/occupied by Myrtle Lavinia Jeffreys. By 1941/42 the owner was George Ewart Owen.
The house was originally number 606 and is Lot 1161.
