Statement of Significance

The place demonstrates the development of machinery and technology in Ballidu. It was a purpose built showroom, of which there were few at the time, and very few remaining. It makes a considerable contribution to the character, mainstreet streetscape, and townscape of Ballidu

Physical Description

Cement block construction. The gable roof is clad with corrugated iron as is the skillion verandah extending over the pavement. The frontage has a shop window and two sets of glass doors allowing an opening large enough for a motor vehicle. The three timber columns are unequally spaced to allow for the vehicle access. The parapet is stepped and rounded with a centre circular "General Motors Holden" emblem, and the name of the service station.

History

Harry Goodie first operated the shop as an agency for Massey and General Motors Holden. In 1951, Goodie and Garrety were the proprietors, and later Bert Beilby bought the store and his son in law Norm Johnson ran the agency. (was there in 1956). Norm built a workshop behind the showroom to service tractors and cars. In 1964, B Court and B Castledine took over the Massey Ferguson agency and the garage, but it was not a successful venture for them, and they left. The place remained empty until the late 1970s, when Jack Shaddick owned the place and Bev and Terry Mailey managed the garage, and established an amusement parlour in the showroom. In the early 1990s, it was again vacant. It has since been used as offices, and a craft retail outlet.
