Physical Description

House, 220 High Street a single storey, brick and tile house with an asymmetrical facade designed as an example of the Interwar Californian Bungalow style of architecture. The walls are rendered brick. The roof is hipped and gabled with exposed rafters and clad with tiles. The gable end features vertical timber battens. A rendered chimney is evident. There is a high rendered masonry wall to the front boundary line making further description difficult.

History

As was customary in English towns, the main street of the town was named High St.
In 1891 the land on which house 220 High Street stands was a vacant lot owned by Joshua Beasley. By 1899 two five room dwellings had been erected and were owned by Beasley. One was occupied by Richard Roberts a traveler and the other one has no occupant listed. The following year Beasley was still the owner and the tenants were John Percell, a harbour worker, and Charles Marguard, a carpenter. In 1901/02, Beasley still owned the two cottages but no occupants were recorded in the rate books of this period. The following rate period the cottages were occupied by William Hopper, a jeweler and Charles Munnery a bricklayer. By 1941/42 the lot was vacant land owned by Charles Merwyn Hanson. Hanson had built a house on the lot, number 1001, by the following rate period of 1942/43.
