The place at 18B Finlay Street has cultural heritage significance for the following reasons:
It is one of only a few examples in the Albany town area of a corrugated iron clad simple cottage dwelling, and which has retained a high level of authenticity.
The place has landmark value with its prominent location, on the corner and sitting high above Rowley and Finlay Streets
It is one of a group of houses in Finlay Street that have heritage value both individually and as part of a relatively harmonious streetscape mainly reflecting the Federation architectural style.
The place was demolished in 2021.
Some of the notable features of this place include:
• Elevated corner position
• Corrugated iron walls and corrugated iron hipped roof
• Symmetrical façade with central door with single double hung sash window on each side
• Verandah under separate roof and infilled
• Simple wooden steps leading to wooden decking of verandah
• Timber balustrading – ‘colonial’ criss -cross style
• Single chimney
Some obvious modifications include:
• New Colorbond roof
• Bullnose front verandah replacing original skillion
There is no remnant fabric or other physical evidence of the former house as noted above that was retained post demolition, either in-situ or integrated into the new development.
The place at 18B Finlay Street was built on original Suburban Lot 131 which was a large Lot. One of the first owners of Lot 101 was William Finlay who is well-known as Albany’s first Mayor (1885). It was subdivided by 1890 to create smaller building Lots. After subdivision the place was located Lot 1 of Sub Lot 131. The House at 18 Finlay Street is also situated on the same Lot 1.
The house was demolished in 2021.
