Duplex, 143-145 South Terrace , is a typical single storey brick and tile duplex dating from 1904. The place has aesthetic value for its contribution to the streetscape and the surrounding area. It is representative of the typical building stock located within the residential areas of Fremantle. It is historically significant as a representation of typical workers' houses in the Fremantle area. The place is an example of the Federation Bungalow style of architecture.
Duplex, 143-145 South Terrace is a single storey brick and tile house designed as an example of the Federation Bungalow style of architecture. The walls are rendered brick. The roof is hipped and clad with tiles. The overall façade of the two places is symmetrical with two central front doors and timber framed casement windows either side. The verandah is under a continuous roof supported by rendered pillars on brick piers, and a low rendered wall balustrade. There is a low brick wall to the front boundary line, and a similar low wall dividing the two houses.
The rate books show a cottage here in 1903-4.
Lot 559 is described as previously no. 231 (1902) and later no. 145.
A colour photo taken January 1989 shows a pair of joined dwellings with a tile roof hipped to a central point with a verandah under the main roof also hipped. The pair of dwellings appear to be mirror-image, with the left hand side (145) having a door on the right hand side of the front wall and a pair of casement windows either side of a central fixed pane and an electricity meter to the left of the door in a glass doored box, while the right hand dwelling has the door on the left and the window on the right. The verandah has a low rendered wall in front with a decoratively curved top and 5 classical style pillars supporting it, one being between the 2 front doors, where there is also a full height wall dividing the verandah into 2 parts, one for each house.
