The townsite represents a way of life no longer practised.
The Gabalong townsite was gazetted. A site was allocated for a hotel, but the town never developed. The only buildings constructed in the town were the 7 houses which accommodated the railway gang. Joe Head was the first ganger, he built a mud brick house which Jimmy Cook later lived in.
The townsite closed in 1994/95.
