Statement of Significance

The Coorow RSL Memorial hall has considerable local historic and social significance for its association with the World Wars. Further, it is one of numerous buildings constructed by local builder E.C. Hunter. It continues to fulfil and important social function as the pre-primary centre.

Physical Description

Small rectangular hall built of impressed concrete blocks, with plain blocks used to give quoining around window and door openings and at the corners of the building. There is a gable roof with rear lean-to and large air conditioner on roof and a brick chimney to the north east. The entry porch has a flat roof with parapet above which bears the wording "RSL Memorial Hall". Entry is via double timber doors, three steps lead up to the entry. Windows are timber framed, five to the north and four to the south with a single entry door. There are buttressess to the side walls. The exterior is painted cream with maroon to the quoining. Inside, there are timber floors and a new ceiling.

History

Built at a cost of £4000 by local builder E. C. Hunter. The president of RSL was Mervyn Williams. Due to diminished numbers, the branch closed and the building was leased to the Coorow Shire Council with an agreement for use by the Ministry of Education as a pre-primary school.
