HIGHLY SIGNIFICANT AT LOCAL LEVEL. High level of protection appropriate: provide maximum protection under the Town Planning Scheme with encouragement to the owner to conserve the significance of the place. Prepare a floor plan and photographically record the place prior to any redevelopment.

Statement of Significance

The site has high local significance for historic and social reasons because of the graves of early
pioneers of the district who are buried there.

Physical Description

is is the original cemetery for Roman Catholic burials containing early headstones and railings. A simple pipe
and 'cyclone' mesh fence, which probably replaces an earlier stone or timber fence, encloses the site. Research
of early photographs may reveal the original fencing (if any) which may be more appropriate

History

The interdenominational Gwalla Cemetery (Site No. 132) was the first cemetery in Northampton. However, as the
population of the town grew, each religion established their own churches and cemeteries. The old Roman
Catholic Cemetery contains the graves of some of the district's early pioneers. It is no longer in use, having been
replaced by the new town cemetery in Onslow Street (Site No.43)
