An historic site without built features.

Statement of Significance

The site represents a way of life associated with the supply of water and provision of recreational facilities which is no longer practised. It demonstrates associations with Belka settlers.

History

The dam was one of the many supplied by the Government throughout the agricultural areas to sustain the development of the region and encourage settlement. This dam was the source of the district water supply until the scheme water was connected in 1923. A caretaker watched over the precious water supply and water drawn from the dam had to be paid for. After the scheme water supplied much of the distirct, the Government Dam was used for swimming, being possibly the first swimming pool in the Bruce Rock area. It was so popular that an approach was made to the Roads Board to provide public toilet facilities at the site. It never eventuated.
