History

Initially a controversial subject, generous support was realised when fund raising began for the swimming pool. At a meeting in 1962, a 12 person committee was formed to investigate the Olympic pool for a cost of £40,000. Some doubts about the viability of the project resulted in another public meeting in May, and the pool was fully endorsed. The farmers' offer of 900 acres for a cropping project was decisive in raising the required funds. A poor season lowered the amount of funds expected. The pooi was finally opened en 18 November 1966, by the Premier David Brand. John Milverton's unwavering enthusiasm and support for the project was commended. At the same ceremony, stage two of the town water supply was opened by the Minister for Works and water Supplies, Ross Hutchison MLA. A small fountain at the front of the pool represents that development. In 1967 school vacation swimming classes were instigated and inter-school swimming carnivals provided competition between Wagin and Lake Grace. In April 197G the Swimming Club was formed.
