Statement of Significance

The site has significant associations with the settlement of the Roberts family and cricket.

History

William Jenkins Roberts only daughter Matilda married Henry William Scott, son of Robert Scott of Roseland (ref No.82) His son Thomas took up this property opposite Scott's Roselands, and built a home in 1863 with bricks made from the clay pit on the property. Vernon Roberts (married May) was the tenth child of Thomas's twelve children.
Regular games of cricket were enjoyed at the homestead until a district association was formed in 1896. then the cricket pitch was for the Elgin Stratham Sports Club.
Thomas Roberts and his wife Mary Eliza (nee Properjohn) had eleven children. Like others in the Capel area, they ran cattle and bred remount horses for the Indian army which were purchased by W. B. Mitchell and shipped from Bunbury to Calcutta.
In 1972, Vern died and the property passed to the youngest son Ronnie Roberts.
