Statement of Significance

The Kailis Crayfish factory has some historic significance for its connection to the establishment of the fishing industry in Dongara, however the place has been considerably altered.

Physical Description

The Kailis Crayfish factory has several gable roofed buildings. The office is a single storey building, painted grey with fibro infill to the gable end and the corporate logo. The factory consists of two adjoining gable buildings with a loading dock to the north.

History

The Kailis Crayfish processing plant was built in 1959-60 by Yama Pty Ltd. Soon after, Michael Kailis bought the factory. The original brick and asbestos building was demolished in 1996. The complex has grown to consist of many building and includes a second crayfish processing plant on this site, which was built in the 1960s by the Ross International Fishing Company.
