The place demonstrates a way of life no longer practised. It is a fine, unique example of vernacular architecture of the period, and demonstrates a high degree of integrity and authenticity. It makes a considerable contribution to the streetscape and is a landmark and essential character element in the townscape of Newdegate.

Physical Description

The double height building is a timber framed structure clad with weatherboard.
The roof is corrugated iron in a gable style. A bull nose verandah extends along the two street
frontages of the place and the truncated corner. The verandah extends form the wall at a height of
about 3 metres, and fixed lights extend along the same facade above the verandah.

History

Charles Hainsworth had the place constructed for his saddlery business in 1928. at a time when mechanisation was beginning to infiltrate the agricultural and transport industries, it was a very bold business enterprise and premises. The Dining Room was planned as the "Grand Cafe" and the Museum which now occupies that room, still has examples of the furniture and fittings which were arranged for the cafe, including inscribed cutlery. A number of outbuildings were constructed on the site, including a cellar, and a bathroom under the tankstand.
