Statement of Significance

The Kukerin School has aesthetic, historic, representative and social cultural heritage significance. Since
1914 the school has provided a central focus for education of the district's children. The school has historic and social value with its connection to the original Wishbone School and the memories of many students that have been through the doors in the last nine decades. The school is a surviving representative of many small rural schools that service country towns throughout Western Australia.

Physical Description

Some of the notable features of this place include:
• Set in grounds surrounded by mature trees
• Old part of school weatherboard but now clad with asbestos fibre
• Long rectangular building
• Medium pitch corrugated iron roof
• Two visible chimneys
Some obvious modifications include:
• Changes in the school reflected in the different window styles adopted over time

History

Kukerin residents had to be very active to get Education Department approval for a school to be built at
Kukerin. The final approval was only given after many previous applications had been rejected. Kukerin
gaining a school was a loss to Wishbone, whose school was closed (much to the disappointment of the
Wishbone parents) and relocated to Kukerin school site. Mr W Clark reassembled the old Wishbone School.
The desks and other school furniture from Wishbone were included in the relocation. Miss Rosie O'Rourke
was appointed as the first teacher and the school opened in September 1914.
The school was extended in the 1930s and then again in 1951. In 1969 the school had 109 students but during the 1970s the school suffered a sharp decline in numbers owing to the rural recession and the withdrawal of the stationmaster, shire employee and other services. In 2001 the school has a population of 36 students and three teachers.
