Statement of Significance

Building forms part of remnant building stock which makes up historic town's fabric.

Physical Description

Single-storey Federation style villa built of cavity brick with corrugated iron. Roof has twin decorative half timbered and rough cast gables at front. There is a bullnosed verandah across front with original chamfered posts and fretted timber valance. Brickwork is tuck-pointed with the house symmetrical with pairs of double hung sash windows either side of front door.

History

Federation home typical of home built for Guildford's more affluent families. House financed by G Gill in 1911 for sister-in-law, Miss H Chester. In 1919 property was purchased by Mr Charles Rhodes, Mayor of Guildford 1921-22. Originally a horticulturalist from Yorkshire, he landscaped Stirling Square and planted rose garden. Family were involved in many fund raising schemes in post war period and were well known for their involvement and commitment in the community. The garden extended to the rear of the old shops facing James Street.
