Statement of Significance

69 Clarendon St is significant as a typical example of a house built by the State Housing Commission in Derby in the 1950's during the period of expansion following WWII. the adjacent shop is also representative of life in the town in the 1950's and 1960's/

Physical Description

The house at 69 Clarendon St is a typical example of a house erected in the north of WA by the State Housing Commission in the 1950's during the period of expansion following WWII. The house is one of a group constructed along Loch and Clarendon Streets circa 1953. The house is constructed of timber frame on concrete stumps and clad with asbestos cement sheet linings with a corrugated iron roof. The house has had minor alterations including enclosure of part of the back verandah to extend the bathroom in the 1970's.
The shop built in the early 1960's, is constructed of timber frame with a corrugated iron roof and verandah.

History

From 1959 the house was occupied by a Mrs Preest and her sons after her husband was drowned tragically at Willare. He is believed to have been taken by a crocodile. Mrs Preest had the adjacent shop constructed in the early 1960's and used it as a tuck shop providing home made items to the school children.
The property was purchased byt he Shire and used as the residence for the manager of the Tourist bureau from 1980.
