Statement of Significance

Duplex, 6-8 Samson Street, is a typical single storey limestone and iron duplex dating from 1902. The place has aesthetic value for its contribution to the streetscape and the surrounding area. It is representative of the typical building stock located within the residential areas of Fremantle. It is historically significant as a representation of typical workers' houses in the Fremantle area. The place is a fine example of the Victorian Georgian style of architecture.

Physical Description

Duplex, 6-8 Samson Street is a single storey, limestone, brick and iron duplex designed as an example of the Victorian Georgian style of architecture. The walls are limestone with red brick quoins to the door and window openings, and the corners. The roof is hipped and clad with corrugated iron. The façade of each duplex is symmetrical with a central front door flanked on either side by timber framed double hung sash windows. The verandahs have a separate corrugated iron roof supported by chamfered timber posts. The duplexes have zero setback, with the verandah balustrades at the front boundary line.

History

In 1901-02 this land was vacant and owned by John Bateman. By 1902-03 there is a cottage which was owned by John Bateman. In 1905-06 the property is numbered cottage no.8 and cottage no.6. In 1919-1920 Frederick Hollis was co-owner of the cottages.
This place was included on the list of heritage places in the City of Fremantle identified by the Fremantle Society in 1979/80.
