Statement of Significance

STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE The following statement, is taken from the gazetted permanent State Register Entry for the place, as the reasons for its cultural heritage signficance: Lawson Flats has cultural heritage significance for the following reasons:
+ the place is a rare example in Perth of a late 1930s, multi-storey, innercity residential development;
+ the place is a fine example of Inter-War Commercial Palazzo style;
+ the massive, grand, form of the place is a city landmark, and specifically makes an important contribution to the streetscape of Sherwood Court and The Esplanade; and,
+ the apartment building is valued by the community for the prestigious calibre and diversity of its occupants.

Physical Description

Large multi-storied apartment building with symmetrical stone facade and simplified classical idioms.

History

The construction of the Lawson Flats was a key part of an intensive building program which signalled that the building industry in Perth had recovered from the economic depression in the first half of the 1930's

High level of integrity as it continues to be used for its purposes.

High level of authenticity as the building retains original external and internal detailing.
