Statement of Significance

Fauntleroy Park was used by the Agricultural Society as a venue for the annual show from 1883 until 1904. In 1905 the showgrounds were relocated from Guildford to Claremont where they have remained.

Physical Description

A large E. Cladycalyx at the northern end was planted at the entry gates to the former show grounds. A plough to the south was a gift from the Royal Agricultural Society to commemorate its centenary.

History

The Swan Districts Agricultural Society (SDAS) was left without a showground in 1881 as a result of the railway land undertaken by the government. In 1883 the SDAS amalgamated with the Perth-based WA Association. The combined societies secured a new showground on vacant land to the east of Guildford. The Society held an annual show there until 1904.

The Agricultural Society received the Royal Letters Patent at this site and the first Royal Agricultural Show was held here.

In 1905 the Agricultural Society relocated the showgrounds from Guildford to Claremont where it has remained. Part of the original showgrounds remain as Fauntleroy Park public reserve.
