Statement of Significance

The Pingrup Hall has high historic and social significance, despite modifications and additions, and in its original state was one of the first public buildings in the town. It is the centre of social and some civic activity and reflects the growth and development of the town and region. The hall also has some aesthetic value, being a comparatively substantial building.

Physical Description

Part brick and concrete, corrugated iron roof. Extension in rendered brick (c 1970s) and clinka brick facade added to porch and front wall. Pingrup Roll of Honour located in hall. The hall was first located near the hotel in Paterson Street and was relocated to present site and extensions later added.

History

In 1924 construction of a new hall commenced, the contractor being Mr W George. The hall opened in 1925 and was a large weatherboard barn-like structure with a corrugated iron, high gabled roof. The hall was also used as the school. In 1945 improvements were carried out. In 1949 the hall was let to Mr R Fewson for the purpose of showing films, and 10 years later the lease went to Messrs Reid and Marnoch.
By the 1950s a new hall to accommodate the growing community and their social and cultural needs. The hall, built at a cost of 8,485pds, was dedicated to the early Pingrup settlers, and officially opened 27th October 1956. Further extensions were made in 1963. The former hall was relocated to the land on the corner of Sanderson Street and Altham Street, to become a motor garage, known as Hawley's.
