Statement of Significance

The home of John Curtin Prime Minsister of Australia, 1923. Curtin lived in this house from 1/9/1923 until
his death during the war 1945. It has been written "His memorial stands around us ... a free land, a free
people." Acting Prime Minister Forde 1945.

Physical Description

1995 Comment: Of historic interest - home of Australian Prime Minister John Curtin.
John Curtin's House. A triple-fronted gabled brick and tile bungalow with a verandah down two sides that has been sympathetically filled-in. It is made of tuckpointed brickwork with stucco strings and a cantilevered awning over the main side-hung casement window set. Upper walls are rendered.
Additional Comment: On the State Heritage Register.

Reason for Inclusion
1. The place is of higher-order local cultural heritage significance, being classified as Category 1 in the Town’s Municipal Inventory (MI).
2. The place is also heritage classified on the State Register of Heritage Places.
3. The place contributes to the character and amenity of the street, locality and overall district.

History

The home is lived in by his daughter Elsie Mcleod. It used to be no 14. Curtin built another house across the road on
the comer of Jarrad and Curtin Avenue which he intended to move into after the war. He died before this happened.
That house was lived in by his son John until recently.
