9 Parade Street, Roseneath, has cultural heritage significance for the following reasons:
The place is associated with the Burridge family, who were well-known and successful farming family in the Broomehill district and also well-known in Albany as the proprietors of the Premier Hotel.
It is one of a group of houses/buildings in the historically important Parade Street that have heritage value both individually and as part of a streetscape.
Some of the notable features of this place include:
• Set close to street in precinct of Old Gaol
• Good streetscape value
• Good interpretation of garden to house building and design period
• Symmetrical façade
• Brick walls
• Hipped corrugated iron roof
• Bullnose verandah under separate roof
• Good condition and sound integrity
Some obvious modifications include:
• Two storey extension to the rear
• Painted brick walls
The place on which 9 Parade Street is located was originally Lot 170 which was later subdivided into four Lots with two facing Parade Street and two facing former South Street (now Festing Street).
The Rate Book shows the owner as R. R. Burridge. The house was built some time after c1900, possibly around 1912 when the Burridges came to Albany. The Burridges were a large and well-known family not just in Albany but in the Great Southern region including Broomehill, Tambellup and Gnowangerup. Richard Robert Burridge was best known in Albany as the owner of the Premier Hotel in York Street which he acquired in 1912.
In March 1927, Richard and Mary Burridge celebrated their golden wedding and the occasion was reported in the local paper:
Mr and Mrs. R. R. Burridge, of Parade-street, Albany celebrated their golden wedding on Thursday. Mr. Burridge was one of the pioneers of the Great Southern district, and developed a fine estate of 4,503 acres in the Broomehill district. Disposing of his property, he settled in Albany many years ago. Mr. Burridge married in 1877 a daughter of the late Mr. William Searle, a well-known Broomehill identity. The aged couple received numerous congratulatory messages on Thursday and entertained a large number of friends at their residence in the evening. [Albany Advertiser 23/3/1927]
Richard Burridge passed away at his residence in Parade Street on 26 October 1928.
The name of house listed with two interpretations Roseneath (Johnson, Les., Town of Albany Heritage Survey 1994) and Hoseniath Cottage (1994 Heritage Database – Town of Albany).
