The site of the Mullewa Post Office has historic significance for its important role in the delivery of postal and
telecommunication services in the town for well over 100 years. While the current building is of no particular
architectural merit the historic associations of the site give it considerable value.
The original timber framed weatherboard clad post office building, which had a variable hipped roof with
several flues and a comer porch, has been removed and replaced with the present building which fronts onto
Maitland Street. The new building, which was also used as a Post office, is of concrete block construction with
a flat metal roof and a deep fascia which covers an entry porch. The entrance is accessed via a combination
of steps and a ramp off the footpath. The building is currently occupied by the Sunshine Christian Centre.
Mrs Judge from the Royal Hotel was appointed as the Mullewa Post Mistress in September 1892. However
the postal facilities were found to be lacking and requests were made to the govemment to fund a new post
office, which was constructed in 1895 by Aitken and Law, the contractors for the Mullewa-Cuetelegraph line.
Aitken and Law also built the Police Station and the first school in Mullewa. One of the first postmasters in
Mullewawas Mr D.J. McLean. In 1922 Mullewa secured telephone connection to Geraldton. The original Post
Office was located on the comer of Gray and Jose Streets, and was later converted for use as a residence
before being demolished in the 1970s. The new modem Post Office building was built addressing Maitland
Street.
