The railway line at Buntine was the changeover point for crews on the Northam-Mullewa line, therefore barracks were erected for the crew and this provided significant economic opportunities for the town to provide accommodation, food and other supplies, as well as social opportunities afforded by the railway employees, which ranged from establishing a bar at the railway station to starting a rifle club.
