The place has some scientific and social value as an agricultural research station and some historic value for its association with the rural Post War development of Western Australia and the development of the viniculture industry in the area. Generally the buildings at the research station have little aesthetic value and are typical of residential, institutional and agricultural buildings of the post War and Late 20th Century periods. The place has little cultural heritage significance.
The Mount Barker Research Station was established in 1968. The station comprises a large collection of buildings including an office, six houses and a variety of agricultural buildings associated with wool production, milking, viniculture and grain production. The houses are located near the entrance to the property. The office is located further along the road, and the agriculural buildings located beyond.
The Mount Barker Research Station was established in 1968 and contributed to the development of the surrounding area. The station predominately undertook research in viticulture, but also undertook trials in rape, sunflower and safflower seed for seed oil. The Vinicultural research undertaken at the station influenced the development of the grape growing industry in the area. New buildings were constructed in 1970.
