The cottage has local social and historic significance as an early residence and former post office. It
also has aesthetic significance for its contribution to the streetscape.
Simple whitewashed stone cottage built up off the main road. Sitting under a hipped CGI roof, the cottage has a
verandah, partially enclosed, facing the street. The scale and character of the place contribute to the streetscape.
This house was originally built for Mr Drew c1866 in preparation for his marriage. When that did not eventuate, the
house was purchased by the government and in 1876 the first official post office was opened in this house. One of
the building's front rooms was used as the post office, with the remainder of the house being occupied as living
quarters by the postmaster and his family. Customers transacted business from the front verandah through the
window. In 1913 a new Post Office was built further north on Hampton Road (Site No. 87).
In 1920, the building was converted into the State school teacher's quarters. J.J. Jenner undertook the renovations
which included providing a new bathroom and wash-house [Geraldton Express 3/09/1920].
