Statement of Significance

The Square dates from 1833 when the second plan for Fremantle was prepared and the former location of the Square was adjusted. It thereby has historical significance, architectural importance due to its relationship to St John's Church and the Town hall, environmental impact as a landscaped public place and social value as a visual and recreational relief for people.
The modern detailed landscaping in general is inappropriate and does not form part of this assessment.

Physical Description

The area bounded by Adelaide, Queen and Newman Sts, and on the South the section of High St adjacent to the Town hall and now closed to vehicular traffic. This area contains the Church of St Jon and its former churchyard, a number of mature trees and land formerly under the control of the City of Fremantle. It has been landscaped and pedestrianised to form a pleasant public park and setting for the Church and the Town Hall.
