The place is considered to have a high level of significance to the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder and valued by the local community. Maximum encouragement to conserve the significance of the place should be provided to the owner under the town planning scheme.

Statement of Significance

The place is a representative example of Federation Bungalow architecture, common vernacular architecture between c. 1890 and c. 1915.

The place, for its building form and characteristics of its class, makes a positive contribution to the streetscape and townscape of Boulder.

Physical Description

The residence is built in the 'Federation Bungalow style', a term used to describe vernacular architecture between c. 1890 and c. 1915.

Substantial examples of the Federation Bungalow style are rectangular in plan with two rooms projecting forward toward the street. The building is asymmetric with a side entrance and two bays. Verandahs extend across the facade and return the length of the building.

History

Bethel" was built in 1903 for Dr Arthur Waldo Connolly, one of the first doctors on the Golden Mile. He was born in Bendigo in 1870. He later sold it to Dr Walter Bridgeford, an early Roads Board Member and a flamboyant man. Dick Thompson (Mine Accountant) purchased it and, after his death, his wife operated a music school and the house became apartments. Following this period, it became offices to Seigel Exploration before becoming a family home to some prominent identities - Harry Seddon (vet), Dasboroughs and Tonkins.

The present owners purchased the property in 1990 and have partially restored it, making it available to the Historical Society, wedding parties and school graduation photo shoots (information provided by the present owner, A. Lovitt, December 2000).
