The City of Fremantle has identified this place as being of some cultural heritage significance for its contribution to the heritage of Fremantle in terms of its individual or collective aesthetic, historic, social or scientific significance, and /or its contribution to the streetscape, local area and Fremantle. Its contribution to the urban context should be maintained and enhanced.

Physical Description

House, 54 Forrest Street has a single storey timber framed house constructed in the Federation Bungalow style of Architecture. The walls are weatherboard clad. The roof is hipped and Zincalume clad. There is a bull nosed front verandah supported by turned timber posts with decorative timber brackets. The front windows are not original. There is a rendered masonry wall with timber picket infills to the front boundary.

History

The house was first listed in Post Office Directories in 1904 with James Durnin as resident. Numbers were allocated in 1905, at which time the house was No. 131. It became number 54 when the whole street was renumbered in 1939.
James Durnin lived at No 54 until 1929. The next owner/occupier was Fred Spencer who loved there from 1931 until at least 1949 (when directory records cease).
The 1915 sewerage map (No. 2068) shows a small square weatherboard house on the lot close to the street. Unusually, there are not outbuildings shown.
Aerial photos show that between 1995 and 1999 the lot was subdivided and another house built to the rear.
