History

The purpose of the Rabbit Proof Fence was to inhibit the movement of rabbits from the Eastern staes into the developing wheat and sheep areas in Western Auatralia. The No. 1 rabbit proof fence was extending a distance of 1122 miles form Starvation Boat Harbour (east of Hopetown) to Wallal (between Port Hedland and Broome). By the time the fence was completed in c1905 rabbits were already in the west, so the Minister for Lands decided to construct another fence. No 2. rabbit proof fence is roughly parallel with No.1 fence. In 1906, No. 2 fence was completed, and No. 3 fence across to Bluff Point was almost completed.
Settlement consolidated west of the fence, and land in the east was not selected for agriculture before 1909. The first settlement east of the fence did occur at Wogolin and Dudinin. Boundary riders maintained the rabbit proof fence, and were responsible for a set length of the fence. Yard traps were placed at intervals along the fence to trap the rabbits. The boundary riders would dispose of the rabbits. Other examples of the Yard traps are at Locations 109818 and 10833.
