This place has historic value as a representative example of the standard of War Service Home provided by the State Government through the State Housing Commission in the early 1960s.
16 Highbury Crescent is a representative example of a war service home dating from the post-war era. Such houses were built quickly and without embellishment presenting as very simple dwellings. The brick and concrete tiled dwelling is located on the southern side of the road behind an open lawned garden. The house has a flush façade with a flat-canopied verandah to the east of the main entrance, with the canopy supported on slender metal poles. The raised deck is accessed by steps leading to a concrete deck. Windows are timber framed openings arranged with a vertical column of three hopper windows either side of a fixed pane. A panel of vertical timber boards provides the sole decorative feature to the façade.
The pavilion style roof is clad with concrete tiles with a wide brick chimney constructed on the eastern elevation of the house and projecting through the roof.
A detached garage has been constructed to the east of the house of timber framed construction with fibrocement sheet cladding.
Frank and Kathleen Teale were married 1 July 1961 and the State Housing Commission built this house by 9 September 1961. The builder was Jack Mavric of Messrs. Mavric & Sons of Maddington. This house is typical of the residence built for public housing in the early 1960s. Ex-servicemen were a specific group that were provided the opportunity to secure public housing because of the contribution during times of war.
Frank Teale (1909-1965) was a serviceman who served on Crete and mainland Greece as a driver in the Australian Transport Platoon between January 1941 and 19 December 1945.
