Physical Description
Natural feature of bushland incorporating seams of coal in bed of Irwin River. Prolific wildflowers in season. Picnic and viewing areas for public recreation.
History
During an exploration traverse in 1846, the Gregory brothers and others discovered coal in the Irwin River. First coal discovery in the colony, causing expectation of mining reserves for fuel.
Exploration of coal seams proved the reserves uneconomic. Now the main tourist attraction of both the Mingenew and Mullewa Shires.
