The site represents a way of life no longer practiced, and
demonstrates associations with pioneers of the district.
The history of tennis is that of a social fun and
family activity. Tennis courts were evident throughout the district at private homes and in small
community centres. The first community courts were in the district were at South Kulin in 1913. The
courts were constructed by the community and located on Gordon land. WD Johnston, who was
Minister for Works at the time, opened the courts.
The tennis games were a social event, and the close proximity of the dance floor (on a different farm -
Ref No) suggests a continuation of the social interaction after the tennis was over on the day.
In close proximity to the tennis courts, S Gordon made the land available for the Presbyterian manse.
It subsequently blew down.
