Statement of Significance

The Railway station represents the railway line which was the catalyst for the development of the area. The railway line provided the transport and communication to sustain an otherwise isolated, or non-existent country town. The station is one of the few remaining of its type in the wheatbelt

Physical Description

The brick building is located on the north side of the railway tracks. A set of steps lead to a double door on the track side, and a long ramp leads to a door on the west side. The corrugated iron roof is a hipped construction with gablets each end. The eaves overhang is extensive all around the building . Timber struts support the overhang.

History

On 15 December 1910, the first stationmaster was appointed to the Wickepin Railway Station. The trains facilitated interaction between different districts, and the Football train to Williams was a popular annual event from 1913 to 1915. The Boxing day picnics to Lake Yealering were an annual event that carried on for a good many years. In the late 1930s the shopper trains were a popular event in Wickepin. During the war, the trains catered for passenger sonly. The trains picked up cream cans for the Great Southern Butter factory, and eggs for the Egg Board in Narrogin. The station master handled all the goods in and out of Wickepin, including the mail for the post office. In 1981 the railway passenger service was ended, and a road bus service introduced to Perth once or twice a week. . At that time the station-master was withdrawn from the Wickepin Railway Station. Now the only trains that pass through the Wickepin station are the grain and super-phosphate haulers
